MHS flags for Freedom event

The promise carried forward by generations of Americans was handed to the future leaders at the inaugural Flags for Freedom ceremony at Massapequa High School on June 3. Veterans from local organizations presented American flags to dozens of soon-to-be graduates during a poignant program in the auditorium.

Senior James Benjamin led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by Giavanna Pizzo singing the “Star-Spangled Banner.” Principal Barbara Lowell introduced veterans including their ranks and branches of service. There were remarks from Superintendent Dr. William Brennan, Board of Education President Kerry Wachter, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Brian Trapani and Operation Democracy President Margaret Marchand. William Colfer, past commander of VFW Post 7763, was the keynote speaker.

Across the Massapequa School District, activities and events are taking place to celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The hope is for Flags of Freedom to become an annual ceremony to send seniors into their post-high school lives as engaged and informed citizens.

In speaking to the seniors, Dr. Brennan noted that they had recited the Pledge of Allegiance, hand over heart, to start off the school day approximately 2,330 times since beginning kindergarten. He asked them to hear the words differently from this point forward as a reminder that freedom comes with responsibility.

“The flag before us is more than fabric,” Dr. Brennan said. “It carries the story of America, the courage of those who served, the sacrifice of those who gave and the promise entrusted to every generation.”

Ms. Wachter spoke about the district’s mission “Creating leaders… one child at a time,” and said Flags for Freedom is an example of that mission coming to life. She added that a key component of education is preparing students to become responsible citizens.

In his keynote address, Mr. Colfer spoke of growing up in Massapequa but not really understanding the meaning of the flag until he joined the Army and served during the Vietnam War.

“It’s a great gift to serve your country,” he said to the seniors. “All of you are what we fought for and we are so proud of you.”

During a flag-folding demonstration, Mr. Colfer explained the meaning behind each of the 13 folds.

Local veterans began handing out folded flags to 85 seniors, beginning with students who have military commitments after high school, followed by relatives of the veterans on stage. Curriculum Associate for Social Studies Jason Gelardi read aloud the name of each senior who came up to accept a flag. The program closed with the playing of taps and student Chloe Legate singing “God Bless America.”
