Field day always brings lots of excitement at any school, but this year the hype was brought to a new level at Fairfield Elementary School. The first-ever field day pep rally took place on June 5, the afternoon before the big day of games, races and friendly competition.
The entire student body gathered on the back field for the hour-long event that was filled with school spirit. Fifth graders were clad in their red Class of 2025 T-shirts. The band, directed by Kristin Hodulick, played a variety of songs including the “Star-Spangled Banner,” “New York, New York” and the “Star Wars” theme.
Assistant Principal Megan Pavlick introduced this year’s theme for field day, as the event would be dedicated to first responders for their heroic contributions. To celebrate that theme, fourth and fifth grade chorus members ended the pep rally by singing “Everyday Heroes” under the direction of John Aebly.
In between the band and choral performances was a special treat for students. There were three races featuring teachers in inflatable costumes. To great surprise and lots of cheers, they emerged from the gymnasium dressed up as different animals and popular cartoon characters.
The first race featured teachers from grades K-2, followed by the grades 3-5 heat. Special area teachers ran across the field in the final race. A total of 33 teachers participated.
The idea for the pep rally came from physical education teachers Amanda DelGiacco and Heather Poetsch, who coordinated the well-received event.
