A “Two Eyes, One Page” activity helped second graders at McKenna Elementary School tap into their creativity. Students in Ms. Rosario's class were each handed a single sheet of paper that featured nothing but a pair of eyes in the center. Their mission was to then use their imaginations to draw an animal, character or object around the eyes and write a descriptive story about their creation.
Ms. Rosario noted that a small visual cue helped reduce blank-page anxiety while still giving children the freedom to create an innovate. They exercised creative thinking by transforming a simple visual prompt into an original character, and descriptive writing by using sensory details and complete sentences.
