The first five weeks of summer vacation have been spent building the future of Massapequa Chiefs athletics. Following a year that featured numerous Nassau County, Long Island and New York State championships by the high school’s varsity teams, athletes worked with youngsters to help continue that success.
This year’s camps included baseball, girls basketball, bowling, cheerleading, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls soccer, speed and agility, speed, strength, stamina and ability, track and field, boys and girls volleyball and wrestling. The programs took place at Berner Middle School, Massapequa High School and local businesses. Most camps ran for one week, but several were held over multiple weeks, and varied in ages for elementary, middle and high school athletes.
Each camp was focused on skills, with coaches teaching the fundamentals of their respective sport. Supporting them were current and former Massapequa athletes, who assisted by working directly with children. They provided demonstrations, led stations that targeted specific skills and ran scrimmage games for participants to put their knowledge into practice. The young athletes were able to gain personalized instruction at every camp while getting to know their future teammates.
