boys volleyball fall champions

Proudly wearing their championship shirts, athletes from a trio of title teams were recognized at the Massapequa School District’s Jan. 8 Board of Education meeting. The fall championship celebration featured the Chiefs varsity field hockey, football and boys volleyball teams.

“There’s always so much success to celebrate with our teams,” Superintendent Dr. William Brennan said, noting that Massapequa’s athletes exemplify character, pride, resilience and teamwork.

The field hockey team, led by head coach Morgan Ortega, won its fifth consecutive Nassau County championship. Varsity football, led by coach Kevin Shippos, captured its third consecutive Conference I Long Island championship and second Rutgers Cup in three years as the best overall team in Nassau County. The boys volleyball team, under the direction of head coach Elissa DiSalvo, won its first ever New York State championship and finished the season with a perfect record.

Players from all three teams were provided with championship shirts by the athletic department. Board of Education President Kerry Wachter and Interim Director for Physical Education, Health, Athletics and Recreation Matt McLees also commended the players and coaches on their outstanding seasons.
