If kindness spreads throughout the world, the starting point just might be a second grade classroom at Birch Lane Elementary School. To mark World Kindness Day, students in Colleen McCree’s classroom made a unity wreath out of their handprints.
Ms. McCree explained the symbolism of the wreath: one act of kindness can cause a chain reaction that keeps going around and around, like a circle. One the paper handprints, each student wrote a sentence about a way to show kindness, along with drawing a picture.
Prior to the wreath activity, Ms. McCree’s students sat together on the carpet for a discussion on the history and meaning of World Kindness Day. They talked about ways to show kindness to others as well as how being kind benefits everyone.
