Artificial intelligence will be expanded as a learning tool in the Massapequa School District beginning in the 2025–2026 school year. Through thoughtful planning and a commitment to responsible integration, the district is introducing new resources designed to support and enhance student learning.
Massapequa has been a leader in AI over the past few years, and has sought feedback from multiple stakeholders to develop best practices. In the 2023-2024 school year, a target group of district leaders and educators made recommendations for district guidelines on the use of AI. They focused on several areas including curriculum, data security, bias and fairness, ethics and integrity, and professional development.
The following year, AI was introduced as a resource for administrators and teachers to assist with assessment creation, curriculum development, data analysis, differentiating instruction, informational resources, lesson planning, personalized learning, streamlining communications and student engagement. Professional development sessions, introducing teachers to AI resources, were led by Executive Assistant for Instructional Technology and Innovation Alison Morgan, technology learning coaches Jennifer Emberley, Jarrett Fifield and Meredith Marin, and building computer teaching assistants.
“Our team has worked to ensure that AI is not just a tool, but a meaningful part of how students learn and grow,” Ms. Morgan said. “This work is about more than technology; it’s about creating opportunities, fostering curiosity and preparing students for a rapidly changing world.”
A Parent University workshop last year, hosted by the instructional technology team, focused on AI guidelines and recommendations. It provided parents with valuable information about the emerging technology, and how their children can use it safely and appropriately.
The AI target group reconvened last school year to explore several student platforms and recommend one for use this school year. The group selected Magic School, which will serve as the starting point for AI in instruction. Teachers will receive professional development on integrating the platform with students to support personalized learning, problem-solving, studying, writing, information synthesis, and more.
Embracing AI aligns with the district’s mission and vision, which is to provide all students with a rigorous education that prepares them for success in multiple pathways.
Massapequa is equipping students with the skills they need for success in college and career. AI is a fast-growing technology impacting almost all facets of life, and students must leave high school with knowledge of the tools they will use in the future.
