Young mathematicians are moving beyond the basics of addition and subtraction at Unqua Elementary School and exploring more advanced concepts. Second graders have been working on measuring while third graders are furthering their understanding of time.
A measuring unit in second grade classrooms has introduced students to different units of measurement. They have been using rulers meter sticks to determine the height, width and length of various objects around the room like bookshelves, chairs and rugs.
In third grade, students have been learning to tell time by reading analog clocks. Each child received a miniature clock with two hands to set to different times, figuring out where the hour hand should fall based on the minutes. They also completed several word problems to determine starting and ending times.
