To our Massapequa Family,
It’s been five days since we hosted the Special Olympics in Massapequa and truthfully, I’ve been trying to find the right words to capture the magnitude of my gratitude to everyone who played a role. What we experienced together was truly one of the most meaningful moments of my 26 years in education.
What began back in September with the Games Organizing Committee grew into months of planning, preparation, teamwork, and dedication. By Friday evening, as volunteers began arriving to help transform the Berner complex, you could already feel the excitement and energy building. But nothing could have prepared us for what Saturday became.
From the moment people started arriving at 6:00 a.m. to prepare for the day, there was a feeling across the entire campus that was impossible to miss. Standing at the podium and looking out at the athletes, families, volunteers, staff, and packed bleachers, it was hard not to be overwhelmed with emotion.
The joy. The pride. The love. The sense of community.
It was unlike anything I have ever experienced.
Watching the athletes parade into the stadium, seeing the incredible energy surrounding Team Massapequa, the torch carried alongside our student-athletes by the NCPD, Olivia reciting the Olympic Oath, Jada leading the Pledge, Jesse Findling’s powerful National Anthem performance, and even the flyover overhead — every moment reflected the heart of this community.
What made the day so special was not simply that people showed up, but how you showed up. With pride. With kindness. With compassion. You gave your time, energy, and heart to create an unforgettable experience for our athletes and families.
Even late in the day, when everyone had every reason to be exhausted, people continued stepping in to help with enthusiasm and pride. I’ll never forget seeing the Berner custodial team, led by Keith Rende, still moving with incredible energy at 5:30 p.m., proudly sharing step counts of over 30,000 steps, with one team member reaching 44,000, and still smiling while helping one another.
In my opening remarks, I shared what makes Massapequa special: we are a community grounded in tradition, strengthened by unity, and defined by how we show up for one another.
Saturday was the perfect example of that.
Berner looked incredible, every detail reflected care and professionalism, and most importantly, our athletes felt celebrated, valued, and loved. That is something all of us will carry for a very long time.
Tonight at the Board meeting, I will be sharing a short video located here created by our Sports Broadcasting Team that beautifully captures the spirit, heart, and joy of the day.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this extraordinary day possible. I can’t wait to do it again next year!
With sincere gratitude,
William Brennan, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We would like to provide a brief update regarding today's statewide computer-based testing interruptions.
This afternoon, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) reported that its testing contractor, NWEA, is still investigating technical issues that affected some schools during today’s assessments. Their team is working overnight to resolve the problem.
NYSED has made clear that the system must be fully operational for tomorrow and will update districts if anything changes.
As a result, we will not be testing tomorrow.
The Grade 5 Science Assessment will be rescheduled for Friday, May 1, 2026.
The Grade 6-8 Math Assessment will continue on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
We recognize how frustrating these disruptions are for students and families, and we share that frustration. Thank you for your patience as the state works to ensure a stable testing environment. We will share any updates as they become available.
Sincerely,
The Massapequa School District
We are writing to provide an important update regarding the New York State testing that was scheduled for today, April 29, 2026. Unfortunately, NYS encountered another round of technical issues with its online testing platform this morning.
Due to these issues, BOCES instructed us to pause testing for those students experiencing technical difficulties. At the elementary level, our fifth grade students were scheduled for the elementary science assessment and had not begun testing when we were notified. We quickly decided to reschedule for another day to limit the loss of any instructional time given the ongoing technical issues.
At Berner Middle School, many of our students were able to log into the math assessment and actively continued testing. Some students experienced technical difficulties and were unable to continue. The Berner administration and staff quickly responded to the situation, allowing students testing to continue and those not testing to move to another location.
Given these ongoing complications, we are awaiting an update from the New York State Education Department on these technical issues and will update you as soon as we have more information.
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
The Massapequa School District
Dear Grade 12 Parents/Guardians,
As the proud Superintendent of Massapequa Schools, I am continually inspired by our students and the strength of our community. Massapequa represents something greater - service, leadership, and a deep respect for those who came before us.
As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, we are excited to invite our Class of 2026 to take part in a meaningful new tradition: Flags for Freedom Ceremony, to be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at 8:15 a.m.
This is more than a ceremony, it is an invitation for students to step forward as leaders. Alongside our veterans, seniors will take part in a powerful experience that honors sacrifice while embracing their responsibility as active participants in America’s future.
During the ceremony, veterans will bring the American flag to life re-enacting its 13 folds and sharing how each honors our nation’s history and the sacrifices of those who served. Through their stories, students will see that the flag is more than a symbol; it represents unity, sacrifice, and our shared responsibility to uphold its ideals.
We are asking every senior to take the next step and complete the Flags for Freedom interest form, either now or during their Social Studies classes. As part of this process, students will be asked to thoughtfully reflect on: What does it mean to receive a flag from a veteran as they prepare to graduate? What does it mean to be an engaged and responsible citizen, and the role they will play in their community and our democracy?
Parents, we ask that you take a few moments to speak with your child about this opportunity, your perspective will help them approach it with thoughtfulness.
At Massapequa, we prepare students not only for what comes next, but for the role they will play in shaping it. The Flags for Freedom Ceremony reflects who we are, coming together with purpose, honoring what matters, and inspiring our students to lead with intention. Thank you for your partnership in strengthening the values that define our community.
With gratitude,
William Brennan, Ed.D.

Dear Massapequa Community Partner,
As a valued member of the Massapequa school community, Dr. Brennan, Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. Ruf, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, would like to personally invite you to attend an upcoming Massapequa Community Budget Presentation on:
Tuesday, May 12
6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Massapequa High School Auditorium
This presentation will provide an important opportunity to review and discuss the proposed school district budget, including how it was developed and the thoughtful process behind it. We will also highlight key components of this year’s plan, including the proposed capital reserve and anticipated projects such as security enhancements, upgrades to our athletic complex, and continued academic improvements across the district. Each of these investments is rooted in our mission and vision and reflects our shared commitment to “Creating Leaders…One Child at a Time.”
In addition to outlining this year’s priorities, the presentation will emphasize our long-term planning efforts and the collaborative process that guides our work. Our Board of Education, Budget and Finance Committee, along with our administrative team, remains committed to maintaining transparency and open communication throughout every stage of budget development. This meeting represents another meaningful step in that ongoing commitment.
Over the next few weeks, we will present the proposed budget at more than 20 sessions across the school community to ensure that all stakeholders have the opportunity to be informed and engaged. I encourage you not only to attend, but also to share this invitation with members of your organization, colleagues, and family members who may not yet have had the chance to participate.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of the Massapequa School District. We hope you will join us for this important presentation.
Sincerely,
The Massapequa School District

To Our Massapequa Family:
The Massapequa School District is proud to continue its partnership with
the Connor Kasin Memorial Foundation and Mount Sinai South Nassau to
offer no-cost EKG screenings for all students in grades 7–12.
In February, 37 members of the Massapequa High School ice hockey
team—fittingly, Connor’s number—participated in a no-cost EKG screening.
The event was a tremendous success, and we are excited to expand this
potentially life-saving opportunity to all students in grades 7–12 across our
district.
Event Details:
Date: Saturday, May 16, 2026
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Location: Massapequa High School
Appointments are required. Parents and guardians interested in scheduling
a screening should sign up in advance to reserve a preferred time slot. A
parent or guardian must accompany each student.
An EKG for a student is a valuable screening condition to detect underlying
heart conditions that could cause sudden cardiac arrest. We encourage all
students in Grades 7-12 to take advantage of this free opportunity.
