Grade 3 Instrument Selection Begins Tomorrow at 10AM!
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian of 3rd Grade Students,
Your child will become eligible for participation in the Massapequa Instrumental Music Program upon completion of the 3rd grade. We strongly recommend that all students who show potential and interest should enroll in this program as well as the Choral program.
The orchestra and band teachers have been meeting with 3rd grade students, discussing whether your child wishes to be in orchestra or band. You should also have received a letter from your teacher. See the link below to review the letter online.
Visit the Music page on the District Website (link) to view information and complete the Musical Instrument Survey listed under Beginning Band and Orchestra heading. There is a separate form for each building.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We would like to provide a brief update regarding today's statewide computer-based testing interruptions.
This afternoon, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) reported that its testing contractor, NWEA, is still investigating technical issues that affected some schools during today’s assessments. Their team is working overnight to resolve the problem.
NYSED has made clear that the system must be fully operational for tomorrow and will update districts if anything changes.
As a result, we will not be testing tomorrow.
The Grade 5 Science Assessment will be rescheduled for Friday, May 1, 2026.
The Grade 6-8 Math Assessment will continue on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
We recognize how frustrating these disruptions are for students and families, and we share that frustration. Thank you for your patience as the state works to ensure a stable testing environment. We will share any updates as they become available.
Sincerely,
The Massapequa School District
We are writing to provide an important update regarding the New York State testing that was scheduled for today, April 29, 2026. Unfortunately, NYS encountered another round of technical issues with its online testing platform this morning.
Due to these issues, BOCES instructed us to pause testing for those students experiencing technical difficulties. At the elementary level, our fifth grade students were scheduled for the elementary science assessment and had not begun testing when we were notified. We quickly decided to reschedule for another day to limit the loss of any instructional time given the ongoing technical issues.
At Berner Middle School, many of our students were able to log into the math assessment and actively continued testing. Some students experienced technical difficulties and were unable to continue. The Berner administration and staff quickly responded to the situation, allowing students testing to continue and those not testing to move to another location.
Given these ongoing complications, we are awaiting an update from the New York State Education Department on these technical issues and will update you as soon as we have more information.
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
The Massapequa School District

Dear Lockhart Families: As some of you may have noticed, the area around the tree by the Kindergarten and 1st grade dismissal door was recently redone. We are so grateful for the Massapequa Maintenance Crew and the hard work they put in to rebuild the old, rotted wooden box around the tree, plant flowers inside, and reseed around the area. With that, we would appreciate if you do not let your children walk through the box, so our beautiful flowers can grow. We are also going to rope off the immediate area around the tree so the grass can grow. Thank you for helping to keep Lockhart a beautiful place.
Dear Lockhart Families: Below is the link to our iReady Stars for the month of March. These students have worked exceptionally hard on their MyPath and continue to learn and grow. Congratulations to our stars!

Dear Fifth Grade Families: We are very excited for the Advanced Concert on Thursday. This is our 5th graders final concert, and although they have a few other things for the end of the year, the final concert is always bittersweet. We know they will have a great performance at both the school performance and night performance. At 9:30am, our musicians will put on a show for students and staff in the GP Room. This is a great way to showcase their talents and prepare for the parent show at night. At 7:00pm at McKenna, our musicians will perform for all families. A memo was sent home with instructions for the night, including arrival times, concert dress, and dismissal procedures. Please remember a few things. The concert will begin promptly at 7:00 and last about 1 hour. Doors will open for families at 6:45. There is plenty of seating and not a bad seat in the house, so do not panic if you are towards the back of the line. The line of guests will form outside the front door of McKenna and we will only let in our students at the time they are designated to arrive. Chorus will be let in first at 6:15, followed by Orchestra and Band students at 6:30. We will have a staff member at the door to let them in. If you have someone in your family that will physically struggle to wait in line, please email me and we will let them sit in the vestibule. No one will be let into the auditorium prior to 6:45 as the students will be rehearsing. We thank you for your cooperation and look forward to a great show!

Dear Lockhart Families: With the warm weather coming, we love seeing all the students riding their bikes to school. With that, please speak to them about bike safety and proper usage. This morning, we had a number of older students riding their bikes all around the back lawn and we had to ask them to vacate the grass. Please speak to your kids about riding on the blacktop path, parking and locking their bikes, and safely walking to their arrival door. We love when students ride their bikes but we want them to respect the property as well. Thank you for your help with this.
Dear Lockhart Families:
We hope this email finds you well. Around 1:00pm today, the building went into a Shelter In Place due to a report of an unrecognized person in the area. Our Administration and Security Team immediately investigated the manner and deemed there was no threat. During the Shelter In Place, instruction remained and the hallways were kept clear. In less than five minutes, the building was clear and returned to normal activity. We are proud of our staff and students for following protocols to ensure a safe environment.

Dear Lockhart Families: Each April is Autism Awareness Month and one way we recognize this special month is by wearing blue on Autism Acceptance Day and every Friday during the month of April. This year, Autism Acceptance Day is Thursday, April 2, and we are off from school. SEPTA is asking for everyone to wear blue on April 1 and then every Friday in April. Below is the link to the flyer.

Dear Lockhart Families: Throughout the year, we perform different safety drills so all staff and students are prepared if there is ever a real emergency. Next week, we will perform our final Lockdown Drill. As always, it is done in a safe, calm, and child appropriate manner and is never a surprise to the staff and students. Please know that we are taking many steps to keep our building safe, and this is an important piece.
Dear Lockhart Families: This is the last call to submit a request on the form below. Each year, the placement process for making future classes is one of the most important, time consuming jobs we have. Multiple staff in the building discuss best placements for our students. Parents are also given the opportunity to give some input into the process, but understand that nothing is guaranteed and the overall decision lies with the school. Please click on the link to gain more information and use the link on the sheet to the google spreadsheet to enter your input. All responses are due by April 1.
