Dear Fifth Grade Families: Going to middle school is a great time in a student's life and could also pose some challenges. Massapequa is lucky to partner with the YES Community Center and host an evening where there will be a discussion for parents on the social and emotional challenges that may affect your child during their transition to middle school. This will take place on June 4, 6:00 at Berner Middle School. This is a parent only event. Please click the link below to see the flyer with more information.

Field Day Sign Up is almost here! The Sign Up will open at 9pm tonight. Use the link below to sign up. Schedule by grade is attached. Please Note: Grades K-4 sign up for 1 Spot Only Per Family – this means only one parent per family will be permitted to sign up this year. For 5th Grade only, both parents may sign up, if desired. Additionally, Dunk Tank Sitters are a part of the Sign Up Site this year – be sure to check before you sign up as sitters get wet. But first, you MUST be a PTA Member in order to volunteer! Please verify your membership for this year if you are uncertain. This is an insurance and liability issue so we will be checking. Any parent who is not a PTA Member at the time of sign up is subject to lose their volunteer spot as early as May 13th.

Dear Lockhart Families: With the warm weather hopefully approaching, this is a good time for us to send some reminders about safety and after school topics. Please remember that although school is over, students need to be supervised and behave properly on the playground. We have received complaints about students misbehaving and even being physical with other students. Please talk to your children about this as we do not want to see anyone get hurt. Also, when the doors to school close following dismissal, parents and students are not allowed to reenter the building, especially for the bathroom. If a child needs to use the bathroom, they must do so at their own house. Also, as a reminder, please do not park in the staff parking lot for morning drop off or dismissal pick up. We have staff that arrive at different times and this poses an extremely dangerous scenario when there are moving cars in the lot. This is even more important during dismissal. No families are allowed to park in the staff parking lot during pickup. Students have walked behind cars and cannot be seen by staff. It is very unsafe for both the adults and students. Please park on the streets and walk to the dismissal areas in the back of the school. Also, there have been multiple incidents where students were running in the parking lot with their parents a far distance behind. Please keep your children with you when you exit the lot, whether it is immediately from dismissal or after you have given your child time on the playground. We do not want to see someone get hurt. Thank you for your help.
Dear Lockhart Families: We want to thank everyone who purchased a pencil during our "Pencils for a Purpose" fundraiser. Because of you, we have raised close to $700 to donate to the ALS Ride For Life foundation. Tomorrow, the ALS team will be riding past Ames Campus and our 4th and 5th graders will be giving our donation to them as well. If you would still like to donate, below is a link to the ALS Ride For Life flyer with more information and a link to donate electronically. Thank you again for always opening your hearts to help support those in need.

Dear 3rd and 4th Grade Families: We are very excited for the Beginner Concert tomorrow. This is our 3rd and 4th graders first chance to display their talents and play in front of a large audience. It is always amazing to see them shine on stage and we know they will have a great performance at both the school performance and night performance. At 9:30am, our musicians will put on a show for students and staff in the GP Room. This is a great way to showcase their talents and prepare for the parent show at night. At 7:00pm at McKenna, our musicians will perform for all families. A memo was sent home with instructions for the night, including arrival times, concert dress, and dismissal procedures. Please remember a few things. The concert will begin promptly at 7:00 and last about 1 hour. Doors will open for families at 6:45. There is plenty of seating and not a bad seat in the house, so do not panic if you are towards the back of the line. The line of guests will form outside the front door of McKenna and we will only let in our students at the time they are designated to arrive. Chorus will be let in first at 6:15, followed by Orchestra and Band students at 6:30. Our 3rd Grade Recorder students will not be let in until 6:40. We will have a staff member at the door to let them in, but students will not be let in until the designated times even if they are knocking. If you have someone in your family that will physically struggle to wait in line, please email me and we will let them sit in the vestibule. No one will be let into the auditorium prior to 6:45 as the students will be rehearsing. We thank you for your cooperation and look forward to a great show!

Grade 3 Instrument Selection Begins Tomorrow at 10AM!
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian of 3rd Grade Students,
Your child will become eligible for participation in the Massapequa Instrumental Music Program upon completion of the 3rd grade. We strongly recommend that all students who show potential and interest should enroll in this program as well as the Choral program.
The orchestra and band teachers have been meeting with 3rd grade students, discussing whether your child wishes to be in orchestra or band. You should also have received a letter from your teacher. See the link below to review the letter online.
Visit the Music page on the District Website (link) to view information and complete the Musical Instrument Survey listed under Beginning Band and Orchestra heading. There is a separate form for each building.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We would like to provide a brief update regarding today's statewide computer-based testing interruptions.
This afternoon, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) reported that its testing contractor, NWEA, is still investigating technical issues that affected some schools during today’s assessments. Their team is working overnight to resolve the problem.
NYSED has made clear that the system must be fully operational for tomorrow and will update districts if anything changes.
As a result, we will not be testing tomorrow.
The Grade 5 Science Assessment will be rescheduled for Friday, May 1, 2026.
The Grade 6-8 Math Assessment will continue on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
We recognize how frustrating these disruptions are for students and families, and we share that frustration. Thank you for your patience as the state works to ensure a stable testing environment. We will share any updates as they become available.
Sincerely,
The Massapequa School District
We are writing to provide an important update regarding the New York State testing that was scheduled for today, April 29, 2026. Unfortunately, NYS encountered another round of technical issues with its online testing platform this morning.
Due to these issues, BOCES instructed us to pause testing for those students experiencing technical difficulties. At the elementary level, our fifth grade students were scheduled for the elementary science assessment and had not begun testing when we were notified. We quickly decided to reschedule for another day to limit the loss of any instructional time given the ongoing technical issues.
At Berner Middle School, many of our students were able to log into the math assessment and actively continued testing. Some students experienced technical difficulties and were unable to continue. The Berner administration and staff quickly responded to the situation, allowing students testing to continue and those not testing to move to another location.
Given these ongoing complications, we are awaiting an update from the New York State Education Department on these technical issues and will update you as soon as we have more information.
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
The Massapequa School District

Our in school Plant Sale will be Friday, May 8. We hope you continue to support the PTA?
