Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Families,
As a reminder, Berner Middle School will be hosting a combined Moving Up and Awards Ceremony for all eighth grade students on Thursday, June 11, 2026 at 6:00 p.m.
The program for the ceremony will include recognition for each individual student, as well as awards for academic, special area classes, and student character. We are so proud of every eighth grade student and cannot wait to share this special moment in time with the Berner community.
In order to accommodate all of our eighth graders’ families to the best extent we can, the ceremony will be held simultaneously in two locations based on the student's last name. Although there are no physical tickets, we ask that no more than four guests accompany each student, as seating is limited.
● Last Names A-G will be in the auditorium
● Last Names H-Z will be in the gymnasium
Additional details for the event:
● Guests will access the gymnasium and auditorium through the entrances at the front of the school.
○ Last names A-G will enter through the Auditorium Entrance.
○ Last names H-Z will enter through the Visitors’ Entrance.
● We anticipate the ceremony will conclude prior to 7:30 p.m.
● Please note this is a school-sponsored activity and all aspects of the Code of Conduct will be enforced.
○ Student attire must be in accordance with the school's Code of Conduct.
We are excited to be able to provide this opportunity for our eighth graders and their families to celebrate this accomplishment together. We thank you in advance for your assistance in helping make the ceremony a success!
Sincerely,
Jason Esposito
Principal

As has been shared, districts across the region encountered some unexpected technical problem during the NYS testing earlier today that prevented the NYS Math exam from being administered to a number of our students at Berner.
We know that any disruption to a testing schedule can be stressful and unsettling, and we truly appreciate our students’ flexibility and your support in navigating this issue. To ensure our students have a calm, focused environment to complete their assessment, we will be holding a dedicated testing session on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. While this will be a regular instructional day, students who need to complete the exam will do so in the Berner Middle School cafeteria during periods 1 through 3. Our goal is to make this process as seamless as possible so our students can simply focus on doing their best.
We appreciate our students’ patience and your continued partnership as we work through these challenges. Our goal remains ensuring that students at Berner Middle School have the best possible environment to complete the New York State Mathematics Exam.
Sincerely,
Jason Esposito
Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We would like to provide a brief update regarding today's statewide computer-based testing interruptions.
This afternoon, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) reported that its testing contractor, NWEA, is still investigating technical issues that affected some schools during today’s assessments. Their team is working overnight to resolve the problem.
NYSED has made clear that the system must be fully operational for tomorrow and will update districts if anything changes.
As a result, we will not be testing tomorrow.
The Grade 5 Science Assessment will be rescheduled for Friday, May 1, 2026.
The Grade 6-8 Math Assessment will continue on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
We recognize how frustrating these disruptions are for students and families, and we share that frustration. Thank you for your patience as the state works to ensure a stable testing environment. We will share any updates as they become available.
Sincerely,
The Massapequa School District
We are writing to provide an important update regarding the New York State testing that was scheduled for today, April 29, 2026. Unfortunately, NYS encountered another round of technical issues with its online testing platform this morning.
Due to these issues, BOCES instructed us to pause testing for those students experiencing technical difficulties. At the elementary level, our fifth grade students were scheduled for the elementary science assessment and had not begun testing when we were notified. We quickly decided to reschedule for another day to limit the loss of any instructional time given the ongoing technical issues.
At Berner Middle School, many of our students were able to log into the math assessment and actively continued testing. Some students experienced technical difficulties and were unable to continue. The Berner administration and staff quickly responded to the situation, allowing students testing to continue and those not testing to move to another location.
Given these ongoing complications, we are awaiting an update from the New York State Education Department on these technical issues and will update you as soon as we have more information.
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
The Massapequa School District
