Dear Berner Parents,
We hope you are doing well and enjoying the excitement and energy of the new school year.
We are writing to share an administrative update regarding the Berner Special Education/Pupil Personnel Services Department. Mr. Ken Petersen, Special Education Supervisor, will be transitioning to a new role outside the district. During his time at Berner, Mr. Petersen has made a meaningful and positive impact on our school community. Among his many contributions, he has helped develop and strengthen programs designed to meet the unique needs of our students. We are grateful for his dedication, leadership, and service to Berner, and he will certainly be missed.
Following a comprehensive hiring process, we are pleased to announce that a familiar member of the Berner community, Mrs. Kristen Meoli, has been selected to lead the department. Mrs. Meoli has served as the Dean of Students at Berner for the past four years. Prior to this role, she served as a Speech-Language Pathologist at Berner and in other schools throughout the district.
Mrs. Meoli brings a strong understanding of our students, families, staff, and programs, along with the knowledge, experience, and leadership skills necessary to support the continued success of the Berner Special Education/PPS Department. We are confident she will be an outstanding addition to the department. Mrs. Meoli will officially assume her new responsibilities on September 21.

I would like to invite you to the Annual Massapequa Science Research Informational meeting that will be held on Tuesday, September 29th at 7pm in the auditorium of Berner Middle School. The purpose of the meeting is to provide information to aspiring science research students on the expectations, opportunities, long-term goals and our collective vision for Massapequa Science Research.
The first in the sequence of science research courses begins in eighth grade.

Dear Berner Families,
At Berner Middle School, the safety and well‑being of our students and staff is always our highest priority. Throughout the year, we take time to review and practice our emergency procedures so that everyone feels prepared and supported. These practice drills—such as fire, secure lockout, lockdown, shelter, relocation, and evacuation drills—are a routine part of keeping our school community safe.
On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, we will be conducting a lockdown drill, which helps us practice how to respond in the unlikely event of a threat inside the building. We will continue to hold a variety of safety drills over the remainder of the year to ensure that our students and staff feel confident and ready in any situation.
