Today’s Air Quality Index is forecasted to be at an unhealthy level for the duration of today, July 16, 2026. As a result, we have required that all extended school year, summer recreation, and sports camp activities be moved indoors. All indoor field trips will remain as scheduled.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we continue to uphold Berner Middle School’s and cell phone policy, we want to remind you that these guidelines extend to all school events, including the upcoming 8th Grade Dinner Dance on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at The Sterling in Bethpage. Therefore, to help maintain a safe and respectful environment for all students, cell phones are not permitted to be used during the dance. Cell phones are to be kept off and away.
The dance is from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Dismissal will begin at 7:45 PM. In order to make the drop-off and pick-up go as smoothly and safely as possible, please consider carpooling and follow the directions of the security guards and staff present. Fewer vehicles in the entrance/exit area at The Sterling will help us get students into the dance and be dismissed from it as safely and efficiently as possible.
We appreciate your continued support in reinforcing these expectations beyond the school day and we thank you for all of your support that has helped us get to this night of celebration for our 8th graders!
Sincerely,
Jason Esposito
Message from the Superintendent of Schools:
Dear Massapequa Families,
I am writing to provide an update regarding the June 2026 administration of the NYS Earth and Space Science and Life Science: Biology Regents examinations.
Over the past several days, we have reviewed district performance data, consulted with our science teachers and administrators, and listened carefully to feedback from students and families. Based on this review, we concluded that the new Earth and Space Science and Life Science: Biology Regents examinations did not provide many students with a fair opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the curriculum taught throughout the school year.
While we value rigorous assessments and high standards, we believe grades should accurately reflect the learning, growth, and achievement students have demonstrated throughout the year. We are proud of our students for their hard work and resilience and grateful for the dedication of our science teachers as they support students through this transition to the new assessments.
With that in mind, and with the support of the Board of Education, I have updated the district's grading regulation to implement a "No Harm" grading approach for the June 2026 Earth and Space Science and Life Science: Biology Regents examinations. Under this approach, a Regents examination score will only be included in a student's final course average if it improves the student's overall grade. This ensures that students are not academically disadvantaged during the transition to these new assessments.
Please note that, in accordance with NYS regulations, all Regents examination scores will continue to be recorded on student transcripts and used to satisfy applicable graduation requirements. The No Harm policy applies solely to the calculation of local course averages.
I appreciate the continued support of our community and thank our students, teachers, and families for their partnership. We remain proud of our students and deeply grateful for the outstanding work of our teachers, whose commitment to excellence supports student success every day.
Sincerely,
William Brennan, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

Dear Berner Middle School Parents,
On Monday, June 15, we will have our annual locker cleanout at Berner Middle School where students will clear out their hallway lockers for the summer. During an extended homeroom period, all students will throw out all unwanted items from their lockers. They should also bring a bag with them to school to take home any items from their lockers they wish to keep (coats, sweatshirts, water bottles, etc.) that might not fit in their backpacks. It is also important for the students to bring home their combination locks. They will then bring their locks back to school in the fall to put on their new hallway locker at Berner or at Ames.
After students have removed their locks from their lockers, they may keep their cell phones off and away in their backpacks for the remainder of the day and during finals week.
Sincerely,
Jason Esposito, Beth Mullins-Peck, Keri Wing, Rob Tucker, Kristen Meoli, Ed Hoffman and Kenneth Petersen
