September 2, 2025

Dear Ames Families,

Today marked the official start and first day of classes for the 2025-2026 school year, and it has been such a pleasure for all of us at school to connect with the incoming freshman class!  Students are doing an excellent job thus far working to acclimate to the Ames Campus.

In looking ahead at this week, we would like to share the following additional information with you regarding safety and emergency management.  On Thursday, September 4th (Day 1), we plan to exercise a series of mandatory emergency management drills that will include practicing a fire/evacuation drill, secure lockout drill, and lockdown drill as well. These initial drills are announced, and will include specific guidelines and procedures shared through our public address (PA) system in advance. Notification of drills will also be received via the  Informacast system. The following week on Tuesday, September 9th, a bus evacuation drill will take place at the school building once the buses have arrived at the Ames Campus after completing the morning arrival.

As a reminder, a secure lockout is a procedure used when there is an incident outside the school building.  During a secure lockout, each entrance will be locked, and no one will be permitted to enter or exit the building. A school lockdown is a procedure used when there is an immediate and imminent threat inside the school building. Once a lockdown is declared, building activities cease and students and staff are secured in locked rooms while being out of view as much as possible. No one will be permitted to enter or leave the building. In the event of either a secure lockout or lockdown, parents will not be able to sign-out children until the circumstances have been deemed safe. Please know that we continuously work in collaboration with our District Security and Nassau County Police Department in an effort to support the safety of all students and staff in our school community.

Additionally, this week on Friday, September 5th (Day 2) we will be holding a “Welcome Back” Student Assembly followed by a modified bell schedule.  During the presentation, students will be presented with a variety of information, tools, and guidance to assist them with a solid start to ninth grade.

Thank you for your support and cooperation as we navigate a new school year together.  Please know that our door is open to you, and we look forward to continued collaboration.

Sincerely,

Tania M. Willman, Principal

To Our Massapequa Family, As summer approaches, I’m filled with deep gratitude for all we’ve shared this year. Over the last few weeks, I’ve had the privilege of joining many of you—cheering at championship games, celebrating at concerts and field days, honoring milestones at moving-up ceremonies, and rejoicing at graduations. Each of these moments has been a powerful reminder that Massapequa is more than a district—it’s a family. Dear MSD Parents/Guardians, We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to inform you of an important update regarding how we communicate with you about unverified student absences. In our ongoing efforts to improve communication and ensure easy access to notifications, we are transitioning from phone message alerts to text messages and emails for unverified absences. What This Means for You: • If your child is marked absent and the absence has not been verified, you will receive a text message and email instead of a phone call. • This new system will allow for quicker, more convenient communication and help ensure that you are promptly informed. As a reminder, all parents are asked to complete the Student Absence Notification Form located on the Parent Portal to inform the school of a verified absence. Thank you for your continued support with our communications. Sincerely, The Massapequa School District
