Lockhart students study Brazil and learn about the culture through creating their own Carnival Festival

The Carnival of Brazil came to life for third graders at Lockhart Elementary School as part of their study of cultures around the world.

As the social studies curriculum took them to South America, the young explorers learned about the festival that takes place in February. They saw pictures and videos of the elaborate parade floats and listened to Samba music. Students made their own Carnival masks, which they decorated with bright colors, feathers and gems.

Teacher Colleen Kennedy-Beadle noted that the unit on Brazil also included a thorough study of the Amazon rainforest, including its geographical features, the animals that call it home and protection efforts. Students filled out passports documenting all the facts they learned about the country.
