Lockhart students holding maps of new york during NYS Trooper visit

A pair of troopers gave a thorough overview of New York State Police during a presentation at Lockhart Elementary School that supported the fourth grade social studies curriculum. Students have been learning about the history of New York, and the program on Nov. 6 highlighted an important agency that dates back more than a century.

Troopers Michelle Brutus and Scott Wetterau talked to the trio of fourth grade classes, diving into topics such as the history of New York State Police and the role of troopers. Officer Brutus explained the origins of the department in 1917 to mostly service rural upstate areas before growing into a statewide agency.

Fourth grade teacher Nicole Coletta organized the presentation. After the troopers spoke, they invited students outside to explore a pair of New York State Police cars. Children delighted in trying out the lights and sirens.

Ms. Coletta, noting that Massapequa is a community very supportive of law enforcement, said this was a great opportunity for students to meet a pair of community helpers and role models, while also learning about history. Children were also proud to share the New York State maps they recently created as part of the social studies unit, which showcases the different regions.
