Lockhart Students are Connected by Kindness on Unity Day

The collective pledge to kindness resonated with students at Lockhart Elementary School on Oct. 22, as they took to heart the message of Unity Day. The initiative is sponsored by the PACER National Bullying Prevention Center.

Orange attire was the most visible reminder that Lockhart students were coming together in celebration of acceptance, kindness and inclusion. Many students wore shirts with inspirational messages like “Choose Kindness” and “Be Kind.”

The 365 Lockhart students signed their name to one of six large letters spelling out “UNITED.” The lobby was adorned with orange kindness chains to show that students are connected by kindness. Each child from second through fifth grade contributed a link by writing a way they have shown kindness or witnessed kindness. Kindergartners and first graders drew pictures that reflected kindness on paper hearts.

The “Unity Starts With Us” bulletin board featured student pledges against bullying, in which they promised to speak up, reach out and be a friend. Social worker Amanda Pusateri also led discussions with students about the meaning of unity.

“The idea of Unity Day is that we’re all connected and can come together as one to show that we accept everyone, include others and show kindness,” said Ms. Pusateri, who coordinated Unity Day activities. “At Lockhart, we are united in these shared values.”
