Walk/BikeToSchool

Lockhart students were all smiles last week as the PTA organized a Walk/Bike to School day. The purpose of this day is to encourage students to live a healthy, social lifestyle. They rode with their siblings, friends, and even parents joined in the fun. What a great way to start a beautiful day. The PTA made signs for kids to pose with and also set up an assembly for POP Officers to share safety tips.

Nassau County POP Officers Joe, Tom, and PJ explained the importance of proper shoewear, wearing a helmet and bright, reflective clothing while riding a bicycle. Bike riding is a great way to stay healthy. It's not only great exercise and helps build muscle, but it helps clear the mind and relieve stress. Students were reminded to always check their bike before riding; making sure the tires have air in them, testing the brakes, as well as making sure the reflectors are clean and intact. It was mentioned for students to always make eye contact with drivers, as drivers may be distracted by cell phones. The officers loved the honesty of our students who raised their hands when asked who DID NOT wear a helmet while riding their bicycles. Students were given a yellow slip, a warning, letting them know the importance of wearing a helmet. Nassau County will be enforcing stricter penalties on bike safety. Parents will now be given a ticket if their child is caught riding unsafely or without a helmet. Thank you to the Lockhart PTA for organizing this important event. Students are never too old to learn proper guidelines for bicycle safety.
