Dear Parents/Guardians,

The New York State Education Department has recently enacted a law banning student use of cell phones and smart/electronic devices in public schools. In response, the Massapequa Board of Education, in collaboration with the Superintendent, has implemented an Interim Board Policy that aligns with this state directive. As we embark on the start of a new school year, we want to address the Berner Middle School cell phone and smart/electronic device policy with you in accordance with this new legislation.

At school, cell phones, smart-watches, smart-glasses, etc. can create increased distractibility, classroom disruption, compromise academic integrity, lead to cyberbullying, and limit appropriate social interaction. Please review Berner’s updated Cell Phone/Smart Device Guidelines For Students below to partner with us in minimizing issues related to student use of these devices at school.

Cell phones, smart-watches, smart-glasses, and other smart/electronic devices must:
Be TURNED OFF prior to entering the building at arrival.
Be placed in the HALLWAY LOCKER PRIOR TO ENTERING HOMEROOM.
NOT be used during any portion of the school day, from arrival through dismissal. Landline phones are available for students to use in the General Office, Guidance Office, Pupil Personnel Office, Health Office, and/or Deans’ Office to connect with their parents at any time.
NOT be kept in clothing pockets or handbags, which can lead to the misuse of cell phones in bathrooms, locker rooms, classrooms, hallways, etc.

Students may get their cell phones and/or smart/electronic devices from their hallway locker prior to the beginning of 9th period or before leaving the building for the day and keep them OFF AND PUT AWAY in their backpack, until they exit the building.
Students may power on their phone and/or device(s) once they’ve exited the school building.
Cell phones/smart devices may NOT be used on school buses for photos or to record video/audio.
To start the year, we will frequently remind students of these guidelines through announcements in the mornings, lunch periods, and afternoons so they remain aware of what’s expected and required. Students found to not be in compliance with these rules will be referred to the Deans’ Office and issued consequences in accordance with the Code of Conduct. Consequences may include students being required to leave their cell phone/smart device(s) in the Deans’ Office for the reminder of the day, lunch/after school detention(s), and in more serious cases, suspension from school.
Please review these guidelines with your children. We appreciate and thank you for your cooperation as we look forward to a successful school year.

Sincerely,

Jason Esposito

To Our Massapequa Family, As summer approaches, I’m filled with deep gratitude for all we’ve shared this year. Over the last few weeks, I’ve had the privilege of joining many of you—cheering at championship games, celebrating at concerts and field days, honoring milestones at moving-up ceremonies, and rejoicing at graduations. Each of these moments has been a powerful reminder that Massapequa is more than a district—it’s a family. Please click to read my full message to the Massapequa community. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GvEf-FXn8fbddIpkRDGcRrK_9eRXU-io/view?usp=drivesdk Sincerely, Dr. Brennan, Superintendent of Schools

Dear Parents/Guardians, As we continue to uphold Berner Middle School’s and cell phone policy, we want to remind you that these guidelines extend to all school events, including the upcoming 8th Grade Dinner Dance on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at The Sterling in Bethpage. Therefore, to help maintain a safe and respectful environment for all students, cell phones are not permitted to be used during the dance. Cell phones are to be kept off and away. The dance is from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Dismissal will begin at 7:45 PM. In order to make the drop-off and pick-up go as smoothly and safely as possible, please consider carpooling and follow the directions of the security guards and staff present. Fewer vehicles in the entrance/exit area at The Sterling will help us get students into the dance and be dismissed from it as safely and efficiently as possible. We appreciate your continued support in reinforcing these expectations beyond the school day and we thank you for all of your support that has helped us get to this night of celebration for our 8th graders! Sincerely, Jason Esposito

Dear MSD Parents/Guardians, We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to inform you of an important update regarding how we communicate with you about unverified student absences. In our ongoing efforts to improve communication and ensure easy access to notifications, we are transitioning from phone message alerts to text messages and emails for unverified absences. What This Means for You: • If your child is marked absent and the absence has not been verified, you will receive a text message and email instead of a phone call. • This new system will allow for quicker, more convenient communication and help ensure that you are promptly informed. As a reminder, all parents are asked to complete the Student Absence Notification Form located on the Parent Portal to inform the school of a verified absence. Thank you for your continued support with our communications. Sincerely, The Massapequa School District
