Dear Ames Campus Families,
As a reminder, with regard to our ongoing work with the One Book, One School initiative, we will be holding an assembly program, Voices of 9/11: Stories of Service and Strength, on Thursday, October 22nd. During this day, our special assembly will be featuring guest speakers who will share their personal connections to 9/11. Please refer to the revised bell schedule for that school day: Voices of 9/11 Bell Schedule.
Furthermore, all students received a permission slip last week in their English Language Arts (ELA) classes for the trip to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City scheduled for either Wednesday, October 28th or Thursday, October 29th. The field trip to the museum connects what students have read in the book, Ground Zero by Alan Gratz, to real-life experiences, enhancing their understanding of history, empathy, and the significance of remembrance. The cost of the trip is $46.00 per student, and the check or money order must be made payable to Massapequa UFSD. The last day to submit the permission slip and payment is on Friday, October 23rd. If you have further questions regarding the trip, then please feel free to reach out to your child’s ELA teacher or contact the General Office at (516)308-5801.
Sincerely,
Tania M. Willman, Principal
Danielle E. Kennedy, Assistant Principal

Dear Ames Campus Families,
As a reminder, the representative from LICADD returned to our Ames Campus today, Wednesday, October 14th and will be here again tomorrow, Thursday, October 15th to connect with students on the topics of vaping and addiction. The presentations are being delivered in the Physical Education classes.

During this day, our special assembly will be featuring guest speakers who will share their personal connections to 9/11. On Friday, October 16th at approximately 7:40am, we will be evacuating the school building to conduct a Shelter-Relocation Drill. Specifically, all Ames Campus students and staff will walk and be temporarily relocated to Lockhart Elementary School. Once attendance is taken at Lockhart Elementary School, students and staff will promptly return to Ames Campus and proceed with the regular instructional school day. In the event of inclement weather, we will plan to reschedule this drill for Monday, October 19th.
Also, the next Ames Campus site-based Shared Decision Making (SDM) Committee is scheduled to be held on Monday, October 26th at 2:30 p.m. in Room 133. This site-based forum allows faculty and staff, students, parents and administrators to come together once a month in order to discuss ideas and practices in order to make recommendations that will positively impact our school. At this time, we are continuing to look for some interest from parents/guardians in joining the committee. The meetings are anticipated to conclude before the 3:10pm late bus dismissal for students, but can be adjusted as needs and time permit. Please respond to dkennedy@msd.k12.ny.us if you would like to join us as a member for this year.
On Tuesday, October 27th, Island Photography will be back at our Ames Campus and available outside of the cafeteria during all lunch periods for a make-up session or a photo retake. Please note that students will be photographed against a green screen in order to offer a variety of background choices. For best results, it is recommended that students avoid wearing complicated patterns or shades of green.
In looking further ahead, students may wear Halloween costumes to school on Friday, October 30th. However, please be mindful of the following guidelines:
-Students may choose to dress “in costume” if the costume is suitable and appropriate in an educational atmosphere as determined by the staff. Costumes that represent violence or are distasteful/disrespectful are not welcome or acceptable.
-Students are not allowed to carry props. Props include sticks, brooms, weapons, canes, or any item that may be considered by staff to be inappropriate, dangerous, or cumbersome.
Halloween costume masks/face paint/make-up (that cover the entire face) are not permitted; the identity of any student may not be disguised.
-October 30th is a regular instructional day and students are expected to be able to perform all of their assigned tasks while in costume.
-Any students whose costume is disrupting the educational process or deemed inappropriate by staff will be asked to remove the costume.
If you have any questions regarding costumes, please feel free to call the Office of the Assistant Principal at 308-5885.
Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Tania M. Willman, Principal
Danielle E. Kennedy, Assistant Principal
