East Lake Elementary School recently welcomed some very special visitors as scientists from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory brought science to life for third graders in Mrs. Himmelman’s STEM class.
During this exciting hands-on visit, students explored the fascinating world of fruit flies and their role in scientific research. The young scientists were introduced to the concept of DNA and discovered how variations in genes can influence different traits. Through engaging discussions, they learned how these tiny organisms help researchers better understand how living things grow, change, and survive.
One of the highlights of the visit was learning about survival adaptations. Students examined how certain traits can help flies thrive in their environments, sparking thoughtful conversations about how adaptations work in all living things—including humans.
The experience became even more memorable when students had the opportunity to observe fruit flies under microscopes. With curiosity and excitement, they carefully examined the flies up close, noticing details they had never seen before. This hands-on exploration helped deepen their understanding and brought their classroom learning to life in a whole new way.
The visit from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory not only enhanced students’ knowledge of science but also inspired a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around them. Experiences like these empower students to think like scientists—asking questions, making observations, and discovering answers.
East Lake is proud to provide opportunities that spark a love of learning and encourage students to explore the possibilities of STEM every day.
