Balloons Over Broadway: Our Second Grade Parade Story

After reading the inspiring book Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet, our second grade students felt the magic of creativity take flight!  The story of Tony Sarg and his brilliant parade puppets sparked their imaginations, and soon our classrooms were buzzing with ideas.

Each student set out to design a parade balloon of their very own. Armed with art supplies, big dreams, and even bigger creativity, they sketched and used markers to transform their balloons into masterpieces. Some created friendly animals, others dreamed up colorful characters, and a few even invented creatures the world has never seen before!

But the fun didn’t stop there. Alongside their artwork, every student wrote an interesting fact about their unique balloon—sharing what inspired them, what makes their balloon special, or a surprising detail about their creation.

Just like the Macy’s parade our second graders’ parade is filled with imagination, wonder, and the magic of storytelling.
