Earlier this school year, the Massapequa Fire Department invited Massapequa students in kindergarten through second grade to participate in a fire prevention poster contest. The theme for this year's contest was "SMOKE ALARMS - Make them work for you!" The initiative also emphasized the importance of having a home escape plan and practicing it regularly.
Students created posters depicting scenes of fire safety and safe home evacuation. The top winner from East Lake Elementary School was Giavanna G., a student in Ms. Walsh's second-grade class. To celebrate her achievement, Ms. Walsh's class gathered outside East Lake Elementary School to welcome Giavanna, who arrived in style on a Massapequa Fire Department fire truck.
