A well-known sports agent, who knows about the importance of good character in the real world, inspired students at Berner Middle School to make good decisions that will set them up for success. Mark Leinweaver spoke to several hundred seventh and eighth graders on Sept. 25.
The “Why Character Matters” assembly focused on self-representation and addressed how poor choices now can jeopardize their futures. He cited examples of students who lost opportunities, such as having a college athletic scholarship revoked, because of past social media posts.
Topics addressed in the assembly included anti-bullying leadership, school spirt and support, selfless vs. selfish, and social media consequences. Mr. Leinweaver, who represents 75 athletes, coaches and broadcasters, reminded students that they are their own agents and to represent themselves with pride.
“It was a good experience,” said seventh grader Hope K. “I liked how we got to learn about different characteristics and explore our own abilities.”
“We learned to be positive and to think before we act,” added Lake H.
That afternoon, sixth graders participated in an assembly led by members of the Nassau County Police Department’s Community Affairs division, focused on responsible social media use, digital citizenship and bicycle safety. The two programs were part of Berner’s ongoing commitment to student well-being.
