Teachers and parents have long worked together to encourage children to read, and that partnership was recently on full display at Fairfield Elementary School.
During back-to-school night on Sept. 9, third grade teacher Alyssa Yablansky invited parents to create personalized bookmarks for their children. They included quotes, pictures and phrases that would empower students and serve as a source of inspiration throughout the school year.
The following morning, Ms. Yablansky laminated the bookmarks and presented students with the gift from their parents. Her third graders are immersed in reading workshop and striving to grow as readers by building their fluency and stamina. During independent reading time, students read books of their choice and are now using the customized bookmarks to hold the place for the next day.
“We were excited to invite our parents and guardians to support their learners by creating personalized bookmarks and help set the stage for a successful year ahead,” Ms. Yablansky said. “The students are now reading their independent books with newfound confidence, bringing an extra smile to their faces.”
