Youngsters in Emily Conlon’s class at Unqua Elementary School are having a blast in their general music classes. Music teacher Janice Abel greets them each week and they begin with a “hello” song that includes a personal welcome for every child.
Throughout the year, the children have been learning music by singing different songs and playing a variety of instruments. They have particularly enjoyed percussion instruments like egg shakers, rhythm sticks and the tambourine. Body movement is a big part of each music class, and one of their favorite activities is dancing as Ms. Abel plays the piano.
Students learn the fundamentals of music through hands-on exploration. Ms. Abel strives to make each class meaningful and engaging because the children aren’t just observers, they’re performers.
