MHS-Athletics Recognition

A dominant year of athletic excellence for the Massapequa School District was recently recognized by both state and national organizations, placing the Chiefs among the top high school athletic programs in New York and the United States.

The Massapequa Chiefs finished as New York State’s top-ranked Class AAA athletic program and the No. 1 boys sports program in the state, earning runner-up honors for the 2026 Kerr Cup All-Sport Championship. Presented by the New York State Sports Writers Association, the award ranks high school athletic programs based on postseason success. Massapequa placed second overall in New York State, finishing just behind Rye High School in total points.

Massapequa’s success was also recognized on the national stage through the MaxPreps Cup, which recognizes the best high school sports programs in the country and awards points for state championships, runner-up finishes and national rankings based on size of state, popularity of the sport, size of school and number of teams in each playoff division. Massapequa ranked second overall among all schools in New York State, while the boys athletics program was the highest-scoring in New York and ninth in the nation.

Further highlighting the district’s commitment to excellence both on the field and in the classroom, Massapequa High School was also named a 2025-2026 School of Distinction from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. This honor is presented to schools in which 100% of varsity teams earn Scholar-Athlete status during their respective sports season. All 33 of Massapequa’s varsity teams achieved a GPA of 90 or higher.

Massapequa’s varsity teams earned multiple championships in the 2025-2026 school year:

Fall season: Boys volleyball, state champions; football, Long Island champions; and field hockey, county champions.

Winter season: boys wrestling, state dual-meet champions; gymnastics, county champions; and girls winter track, county champions.

Spring season: Baseball, state champions; boys lacrosse, state champions; softball Long Island champions; girls lacrosse, county champions; and girls track and field, county champions.

“I am simply in awe of what our student athletes, coaches and entire athletic program continue to accomplish,” Superintendent Dr. William Brennan said. “From state championships and national recognition to excellence in the classroom, our student athletes represent the very best of Massapequa. This success reflects the incredible talent and determination of our student athletes, the culture of excellence developed by our coaches and athletic administration, and the tremendous support of our families and community programs. I cannot be prouder of the way our student athletes represent Massapequa with excellence, character and pride.”
