Girls Winter Track Team

More than 100 athletes were celebrated for their accomplishments during the winter sports season at the Massapequa School District’s Board of Education meeting on March 19.

“It was a great winter season and we are so very proud,” said Board President Kerry Wachter who, like her fellow trustees, was dressed in Massapequa Chiefs gear.

The district recognized individual and team championships in four varsity sports.

Martina Dalmas was the Nassau County champion in air rifle, the first Massapequa High School student to earn that title since 1995.

The varsity gymnastics team won its ninth county title. Alexis Cuthbert was also an individual county champion on the beam.

The girls winter track team captured a Nassau County title, while Keira McLaughlin (pole vault) and Emma Villalta (600-meter race) were individual county champions.

The boys wrestling team was the New York State dual meet champions and also had five individual county champions: Jon Tutku (110 pounds), Jake Nieto (138), Kai Tiringer (150), Joseph Brooks (157) and James Mulhern (285).

Physical Education and Athletics Chairperson Brian Rath said it was one of Massapequa’s most successful winter sports season over the past 20 years. The championships are a tremendous accomplishment for both the athletes and coaches. Superintendent Dr. William Brennan added that it is impressive to achieve at such a high level and commended dedication of the coaches, the athletes and their very supportive parents.
