ALS Ride attended by Ames and Lockhart students

The ALS Ride For Life visited the Ames Campus and Lockhart Elementary School last week. The Ride for Life mission is to raise money and spread awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

On May 12, Lockhart's fourth and fifth grade students joined Ames Campus ninth graders in greeting the Ride for Life with handmade signs and encouraging cheers and applause. Students from both schools presented donations to the “pALS” who ride their wheelchairs across Long Island and Manhattan in hopes of finding a cure for the 30,000 Americans with the disease.

The Ames Campus presented Ride for Life with a $200 donation. Lockhart's student’s council held a "Pencils for a Purpose" fundraiser and presented a $900 donation.

Christine Pendergast, whose late husband, Chris, founded ALS Ride for Life, spoke about what it is like for those living with the disease, which currently does not have a cure. She reminded students about the importance of being kind to one another and accepting of others differences.
