Across the Massapequa School District, students studied the foundation of American democracy on Sept. 17 as they observed Constitution Day. It marks the day in 1787 that founding fathers signed the document at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia.
Continuing a tradition, all seventh graders at Berner Middle School received pocket copies of the Constitution that are theirs to keep. This year’s students received special editions that mark the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. Seventh graders then participated in an escape room activity in which they had to solve a mystery by finding clues throughout the Constitution. In eighth grade social studies classes, students explored the Bill of Rights and made connects to real-life situations.
Birch Lane Elementary School first graders worked on a Constitution coloring packet that taught them about the history and purpose of the document. Second grade students took part in a “Our Country Has Rules, Too” activity that reinforced three ideas: leaders, rights and rules. Teacher Colleen McCree gave her students feathered pens to complete their worksheets so they could feel like one of the signers of the Constitution.
