Students celebrating Earth Day

Young learners in Massapequa are becoming leaders when it comes to protecting the planet. To mark Earth Day, elementary students explored ways they could make an impact.

At Birch Lane Elementary School, first graders in Emma Fountain’s class worked on Earth Day crafts. First, they came together to brainstorm ways to make a difference, like recycling, planting a tree, using less water or riding a bike instead of using a car. Then, the young environmentalists created watercolor paintings of the Earth before writing on paper hearts three ways they can individually do their part.

McKenna Elementary School students attended a PTA-sponsored assembly, “Sustainable Sounds” by Bash the Trash. Children learned how they could reuse materials to make their own musical instruments. Several students then took their knowledge, made instruments at home, and brought them into school to share. McKenna fifth graders also worked on an Earth Day writing and craft project, detailing ways they could positively impact the environment.
