As the first passes were thrown and touchdowns were scored in the NFL season, youngsters at McKenna Elementary School were preparing to use those outcomes to enhance their learning.

Fifth graders in Ashley O’Donnell’s class are participating in NFeLementary, a football-themed, project-based educational program for elementary students. Sept. 16 was draft day in the classroom as each student selected a team to follow for the remainder of the season. Miniature helmets were placed on the back table representing all 32 teams, and students came up to make their selection as their names were called.

As “general managers,” students will track statistics, research players and make predictions using real NFL data. The experience will support multiple subjects including geography, math, reading and writing, and students will build real-world skills such as critical thinking and teamwork.

In addition to running their own teams, the class will be studying Ms. O’Donnell’s favorite franchise, the New York Jets. Together, they predicted a season goal for running back Breece Hall and will track his weekly rushing yardage all season long to practice data analysis and enhance their math skills.
