McKenna student authors writing about thanksgiving

To get in Thanksgiving spirit and hone their writing skills, third graders at McKenna Elementary School crafted personal narratives about their traditions for the late November holiday.

Students in Lauren Annarumma and Nicole Lipori’s class spent about a week on their “small moment” stories that captured a Thanksgiving tradition through personal experiences. Some of the topics they wrote about included traveling to a grandparents house and seeing cousins, and hosting Thanksgiving and helping cook the food.

Ms. Annarumma and Ms. Lipori said that the goal was for students to work on specific writing skills such as using dialogue and including descriptive details based on their five senses. They also practiced being self-reflective by editing and revising their pieces. Before publishing, the young authors drew a picture that reflected the story.
