Students watch Flora the Elephant during virtual field trip

Students in Ms. Gallo & Ms. Axelrod's class recently embarked on an unforgettable virtual field trip to an Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. A unique experience that brought their reading lessons to life. The adventure began with the students reading "Flora the Elephant" in Storyworks. A touching story about a circus elephant that became too ill to continue working.

The virtual field trip to the sanctuary where Flora lives is dedicated to caring for elephants.  It provided the perfect backdrop for the students to learn more about these amazing animals.  They learned about different species of elephants, their habitats, daily routines, likes and dislikes of food and what a day in the life of an elephant is like!

Through live webcams, students were able to watch Flora in its natural habitat on the preserve.  The students were also introduced to all the other elephants that currently live on the preserve.

Reading "Flora the Elephant" combined with the virtual visit to the Elephant Sanctuary created a memorable learning experience for Ms. Gallo & Ms. Axelrod's 4th graders. It was a perfect example of how technology can be used to enhance classroom studies and bring stories to life!
