Lockhart Freshens Up Special Area Spaces

Students have been enjoying some revamped spaces at Lockhart Elementary School when attending their special area classes this year.

The biggest makeover occurred in the library. Walls were painted yellow in homage to Massapequa gold. The back corner was converted into a reading section with a colorful carpet and flexible seating. There is a creative and exploration area adjacent to the Makerspace resources. New displays were also created such as the cinema section which showcases books that became movies.

Library media specialist Tara Gonzalez said that by opening up the library, it creates a more inviting and functional space for students. The library also better achieves its mission of promoting literacy with more prominent and visible book displays.

Across the hall in the art room, students are inspired by a space that looks the part. Art teacher Alexandria Ahearne brought more color into the room by painting the back cabinets in the primary and secondary colors, and adding some murals. Additionally, there is a revamped area to showcase student artwork.

The STEAM lab on the second floor has some new furniture that is conducive to both younger and older students. The entire back wall was painted green as a backdrop for green-screen technology projects. Teacher Tracey Perles said some upcoming projects that will require the green screen include weather reports by kindergartners and a lighthouse project by students in the Magnet program.
