Planting a Seed for Environmental Stewardship at Fairfield

First graders focused on the three R’s of maintaining a healthy planet – reduce, reuse and recycle – as they learned about Earth Day at Fairfield Elementary School.

In Dallas Dano’s classes, students make bird feeders out of cardboard tubes on April 18. They recycled and reused the old toilet paper rolls to do something that would help other animals. Children first spread sun butter on the tubes, then coated them with seeds. Each student took one home to hang outside.

For another Earth Day project, students painted coffee filters with blue and green paint to resemble the globe. Each child then added a sentence about one way he or she could help the environment.

“I want them to learn how they can help protect the Earth,” Ms. Dano said.
