Business Honor Society Inducts 33

Massapequa High School’s chapter of the New York State Business and Marketing Honor Society grew by 33 students during an induction ceremony on May 18. It was the largest group of new inductees since the organization was founded 11 years ago.

Students must complete three business and marketing courses by the time they graduate, and must be on track to complete two of those courses by the end of this year. Membership criteria includes a grade point average of 88 or higher in business courses and an overall GPA of 80 or higher. Students must also demonstrate character, leadership and service both in the classroom and through extracurricular involvement.

Each new member received a certificate, card and pin. They were recognized by Supervisor of Career and Technical Education Patricia LiVecchi, School-to-Career Coordinator Denise DeLury and business education teachers Charlie Everett, Christine Poggioli and Adrienne Scamardella.  

Junior Paul L., who is taking three business courses this year in addition to two last year, said each class has given him a different perspective on business. Courses he has enrolled in include Marketing, Sports Marketing and Virtual Enterprises.

“There’s so much to learn and that’s what I love about business,” he said. “It makes me proud and it makes my family proud to be inducted into the honor society, and it helps me pursue what I want to do later in life.”

Graduating members of the Business and Marketing Honor Society were also recognized, and they were presented with their honor cords to wear at graduation.

Senior Santhi K., who is looking to pursue a career in aviation management, said her business courses have contributed to her well-rounded at Massapequa High School. The variety of classes, she added, have allowed her to explore different aspects of the business world.
