Berner Career Explorers Make Sales Pitch with Canva

They’re only in eighth grade, but students at Berner Middle School are thinking hard about their futures. For a family and consumer sciences project, students researched different careers, then created digital presentations using Canva.

Teacher Kristen Kenny, with support from technology learning coach Meredith Marin, said that the career research project is an annual tradition, but this was the first year students used Canva to showcase their findings. They had to include information such as job responsibilities, required skills, work environment and salary. The eighth graders used several online sources, including New York State CareerZone, for their research.

Among the professions that students explored were athletic training, education, engineering, fashion design, law enforcement and medicine. Their presentations had to convince others to consider a career in the respective field.

Ms. Marin explained that Canva gave students a wide variety of options for the format of their presentations, as they could create an infographic, poster, social media post, video or more. They had access to a large selection of templates, then could customize with different colors, fonts and graphics.
