Making a Meal with Math at Birch Lane

BLE Math  BLE Math  BLE Math  BLE Math

At home, fifth graders from Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District can let their parents plan Thanksgiving dinner, but for one afternoon, it was up to them. For a math activity, students had to work within a budget to create a complete meal.

Teacher Casey Russell said that students have recently been learning how to add and subtract decimals, and a project based on money showed a real-world application of the math concept. Each student was provided with a sheet of food prices and had to plan a Thanksgiving meal with a meat, sides, bread, dessert and beverages. Their total budget was based on how many people they were planning the meal for – anywhere from 2 to 10 people – with a cap of $20 person.
