Gingerbread Joy for Unqua Kindergartners
The Gingerbread Man and his friends have been making stops in kindergarten classes at Unqua Elementary School and students have enjoyed following their adventures.
Students have been reading “The Gingerbread Man,” “The Gingerbread Girl,” “Gingerbread Baby” and other books based on the holiday confection throughout December. Since the stories have a similar premise but different endings, kindergartners have had class discussions comparing and contrasting the books, helping them become more thoughtful readers.
As a follow-up activity, students stepped into the role of the Gingerbread Man. Working with technology learning coach Alison Morgan, each child’s face was added to the head of a digital gingerbread cookie image and they had to fill in a word bubble based on the prompt, “If I were a gingerbread man...”
Students were called up one-by-one, so they could briefly remove their masks to have their pictures taken using the Chromebook webcam. The projects were completed in Google Slides.
Kindergarten teacher Christine Radomski said that she would print out each child’s slide to add to his or her writing folder. At the end of the year, all of her students will get to take their folders home which showcases all the great work they have done.
