Massapequa Music Program Garners National Recognition

Best Communities

For a dozen years running, the Massapequa School District has been recognized nationally for its stellar music program. Massapequa was one of 754 districts in the United States to place on the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation’s 2020 list of Best Communities for Music Education.

The recognition from NAMM spotlights school districts where teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders come together to ensure that music remains a valued part of education. The Best Communities designation is given to districts that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education based on a survey that measures multiple factors.

Massapequa offers a wide range of music opportunities for students, beginning with general music instruction in kindergarten. New doors open for them in fourth grade when they can sing in the chorus and select an instrument to play in the band or orchestra. Concerts throughout the year allow students to share their talents with their families and the community.

During the 2019-20 school year, more than 100 student musicians from the elementary, middle and high school levels were selected to the 2020 All-County Music Festival, hosted by the Nassau Music Educators Association. Students were chosen to join New York State School Music Association and Long Island String Festival Association ensembles.

“The Best Communities for Music Education award affirms what we know in our hearts – the Massapequa community remains committed to giving our students a well-rounded and diverse set of opportunities in their education,” Director of Fine and Performing Arts Vincent Green said.
