Two Berner Teachers to Join Administrative Team

The Massapequa School District Board of Education appointed two administrators at Berner Middle School for the 2020-21 school year. Keri Wing will serve as the executive assistant to the principal and Melissa Hornik will be the dean of students.

Ms. Wing moved to Massapequa in 1980, attending John P. McKenna Junior High School and Berner High School. The 1986 graduate returned to Berner six years later as a middle school social studies teacher.

In addition to teaching, she has served as humanities department assistant and attendance officer, advised student government and the Yorker’s Club, and been a member of the RULER Emotions Matter Implementation Committee, Shared Decision Making Committee, K-12 Social Studies Committee and Grades 5-8 Vertical Team.

Ms. Wing holds a bachelor’s degree in social studies secondary education with a minor in business from the University of Scranton, a master’s degree in liberal studies from Stony Brook University and school district administration certification from the College of New Rochelle. In her new position, she will succeed Barbara Lowell, who will become the new principal of Massapequa High School on July 1.

“I am excited about becoming the new executive assistant to the principal at Berner Middle School,” Ms. Wing said, “because it will give me the opportunity to take a more active role in the success of a building that has been my home for my entire educational career.”

Ms. Hornik has taught English in the district for four years at both Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School. She has also served as the English department assistant at Berner and advised both the Berner Beacon and The Chief newspapers. Prior to coming to Massapequa, she was a seventh grade English teacher and literacy coach at Stephen A. Halsey Junior High School in Rego Park, Queens.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature and rhetoric with a minor in history from Binghamton University, a master’s degree in English secondary education and adolescent special education from Queens College and advanced certificates in school building and school district leadership from Stony Brook University. Ms. Hornik is Aa member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Council of Teachers of English, National Council for the Social Studies, Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education) and Sigma Alpha Pi (The National Society of Leadership and Success).

Her position is the addition of a second dean of students at Berner to provide additional social and emotional support for Massapequa’s sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Ms. Wing and Ms. Hornik join the administrative team of Principal Jason Esposito, Executive Assistant to the Principal Beth Mullins and Dean of Student Robert Tucker.

“I am excited about the opportunity to connect with Berner students and their families on a larger scale,” Ms. Hornik said, “and to continue collaborating with my colleagues at Berner, but in a new capacity.”
