East Lake Beautification Club is a Cut Above

Cricut Club

The halls are becoming more colorful at East Lake Elementary School thanks to the addition of the Cricut Club. The new afterschool group consists of a dozen fifth graders who are charged with beautifying the building.

The club gets its name from the new Cricut Maker machine at the school, which can cut designs into fabric, paper, plastic and more. Students have been learning different techniques so they can make the most of the machine’s capabilities.

Already, students have made holiday and Valentine’s Day decorations. One of their biggest projects was the creation of an inspirational wall on the second floor opposite of the stair case that leads up from the lobby. The colorful text on a black background begins with “When you enter this building” and ends with “You are the reason we are here.” In between are 10 “You Are…” statements exclaiming that students are scientists, authors, leaders, explorers and more.

The Cricut Maker machine connects to an app on a computer, so students can make the designs, then print, peel and hang up their creations. Club advisers Paula Findlay and Kimberly Watson noted that the club allows students to express their creativity and work as a team to come up with ideas make their school even better.
