Massapequa High School boasted two championship sports teams in the spring 2019 season, and those players were honored for their accomplishments at the June 20 Board of Education meeting.

The boys varsity lacrosse team’s season culminated with a New York State title on June 8. After a 18-2 regular season and going undefeated in conference play, the boys captured the 11th Nassau County and second Long Island title in the program’s history. Coach Tim Radomski said several of his graduating seniors are going to play lacrosse for prestigious colleges and universities such as Albany, Binghamton, Cornell, Duke, Hofstra and Maryland.

The varsity baseball team, led by coach Tom Sheedy and assistant coach Chris Cafiero, won the Long Island championship and advanced to the state semifinals. After a 22-5 season, the team captured its 15th Nassau County title to earn a berth in the Long Island Class AA finals.

“It’ very rare to have two teams be Long Island champions in the same season,” said John Piropato, director of physical education, health, athletics and recreation.

Mr. Piropato added that the teams were well prepared for their competition, had strong leadership from their coaches and had great team chemistry. He said that all of the players are tremendous student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the field.
