McKenna is Alive With the Sound of Music

McKenna Instruments

It doesn’t take a fancy instrument to make music, fifth-graders recently learned at McKenna Elementary School.

To better understand how sound is produced, the students were tasked with finding materials around the their homes to create functional musical instruments. General music teacher Neal Bellon said he was very impressed with the products, which included string, brass and percussion instruments. Several students made guitars out of cardboard and rubber bands, while others used plastic bottles and rice to make maracas.

Students used their Chromebooks to research different instruments. Bellon said that the project help students expand their creativity. Upon completion, each child had to play a short melody or rhythmic pattern.
