To learn more about the transfer of energy, fourth-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School made solar cookers as part of a science enrichment activity.
Starting with empty pizza boxes donated by Gino’s of Tuscany, students worked in teams and created solar cookers using aluminum foil, black construction paper and their imaginations. Each group had to create a device that would quickly melt ice cubes. They first did research on their Chromebooks, then worked together to come up with an innovative and thoughtful design before beginning construction. Magnet and STEAM teacher Kelsey Downey said the project taught students how to harvest energy from the sun.
