High-Flying Science Lessons Engage Massapequa Students (Click to view slideshow)

Young scientists in the Massapequa School District are learning by doing. They are exploring different scientific concepts by thinking, building, testing and tinkering, the same steps that the professionals follow.

Unqua Elementary School fourth graders went into outer space, then had to build parachutes to land safely back on Earth. Amanda Albert, the magnet and STEAM teacher, said their goal was to create enough drag to resist gravity, so their parachutes could gently float down to pictures of the Earth on the floor.

Their supplies included two sheets of printer paper, two pieces of tissue paper, two coffee filters, a binder clip, cellophane and string, along with a paper astronaut. After dropping their parachutes, students measured to see how far off target they were, then made adjustments.
