Second graders have been creating nonfiction books over the past several weeks at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, and each time they add new elements to their digital projects.

Students in Patricia Dwork’s class included “about the author” pages for the first time in their books on animals. They learned that most published books have a page about the writer, so they took the opportunity to include some biographical information about themselves. Using the Chromebook camera, each student was also able to include a picture.

Ms. Dwork said that students made the books using Google Slides. After selecting their animals to study, the young authors then did online research to learn as many facts as they could, such as their habitats and life cycles.
