Winter Books get a Warm Reception at Unqua

Author Jan Brett’s ‘The Mitten” and the “The Hat” were perfect wintertime stories to read in Melissa Bruno’s kindergarten class at Unqua Elementary School. As part of Reader’s Workshop, students do author studies throughout the year, reading several books to make comparisons and explore writing techniques.

During their study of Brett’s books, students looked sequencing in two stories. They learned how to retell a book by reciting events in the right order. The young readers also analyzed important story elements like character and setting, and identifying the problem and solution.

Each student also wrote about his or her favorite part in “The Mitten” and “The Hat” and created an illustration.
